Richard Gutierrez: After playing bad guy, would good dad be next?
By: Marjorie S. Duran
Being an actor requires an openness to “doing different things,” as Richard Gutierrez says. Like most people in his profession, he admits, “(I) have to be versatile so that’s what I’m trying to do.”
Would this include playing father roles, given that he now has a child – Baby Zion, born in Switzerland last year – with actress Sarah Lahbati? Richard insists he is ready, even though he’s never been offered to play one.
“I’m always open to it,” he said when the press caught up with him at the premiere night of “Overtime,” his latest movie. “I’m 30 years old so let’s see kung anong magandang project… as long as the script is good and as long as there’s a collaboration with the director.”
Richard and Sarah have already made a celebrity out of Zion since they introduced him in the public.
When asked if he would ever allow their child to enter showbiz, the new dad simply smiled and said, “Depende.”
Richard shared that he wants Zion to grow up first as a “good kid” and finish his studies before anything else.
He was quick to add, however, “Let’s see what happens…”
Comeback film of sorts
Richard is quite visible lately after almost a year of showbiz hiatus. He is starring in a reality show with his family members, and “Overtime” just hit local theaters.
In the film, the actor plays a hacker seeking revenge against a pharmaceutical company – a far cry from his previous characters in drama and rom-com shows.
“Matagal ko nang gustong gumanap ng kakaibang roles. I’ve been doing bida and romantic comedy all my life so I wanted to do something different. Kung baga challenge ko ito sa sarili ko and feeling ko naman nagawa ko dito,” said he.
The suspense thriller, which had its premiere at The Podium on Monday, actually elicited bouts of laughter from the audience of mostly the cast and select members of the press.
Richard himself was surprised about the outcome but noted, “Mas gusto ko siya na dark comedy. Tawang-tawa ako nung pinapanood ko. Happy ako sa turnout ng pelikula.”
Admitting that he enjoys doing movies more than TV shows, Richard is slated to start filming for another movie under GMA Films this month.
“Overtime” also stars Lauren Young, Mitch Valdes, Bearwin Meily, Renz Valerio and Roi Vinzon.
