Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao urged boxing fans eager to see his much-awaited match against unbeaten American Floyd Mayweather Jr. to be patient.
“I know all of you are waiting but we should be more patient about it. I’m sure there’s a positive result in the coming weeks. Let’s just wait,” the Saranggani lawmaker told The Manila Times after his team KIA’s exhibition match against Blackwater at the SGS Gym in Araneta Avenue in Quezon City on Sunday.
When asked if he has given Mayweather an ultimatum to sign the contract by the end of January, Pacquiao replied: “Let’s see.”
Pacquiao clarified that there is no final agreement yet on the date of the fight as well as the amount of prize money. Mayweather is reportedly asking for at least a 60 percent share of the fight revenue.
“I don’t know. I don’t have any idea. It’s really up to my promoter. That’s why I have a promoter.”
“Money won’t be a problem. It’s not all about the money,” added Pacquiao.
If ever the negotiation failed anew, Pacquiao said that they would just move forward to find a new opponent. “There are many available fighters. Let’s see.”
In a recent media interview, Pacquiao’s long-time trainer Freddie Roach said that his ward’s bout against Mayweather is very close to becoming a reality.
“I spoke with Bob Arum yesterday and I think I’m getting close to saying it’s very close, I think we’re very close,” Roach told Michael Woods of The Sweet Science. “It’s close. I think I know for a fact that it’s closer than ever.”
Earlier, Los Angeles Times reporter Lance Pugmire wrote that the promoters of Pacquiao and Mayweather have already agreed to hold the fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas as well as the drug testing procedure.
